“The animal shelter.” Heidi clarified, a little confused as she looked at Veda before she realized…she hadn’t told her of the shelter yet. Heidi’s ears dipped back, a bit embarrassed. “I…I had lived in an animal shelter all my life.”

Actually frowning, the expression is slight, still not sure of what to say. This wasn’t anything Veda had experience with yet. “I’m sorry.”

That was odd. Heidi hadn’t expected an apology from Veda. She tilted her head to the side, flicking her ears as she thought. “But you…did not do anything wrong?”

“For asking,” is Veda’s quiet answer, able to tell that she’s blushing slightly.

“Yes, they do.” Heidi smiled back. “They taste very sweet. I have never had food like that back at the shelter…” The employees would feed Heidi lettuce and other greens tossed in a feeding bowl. It was very dry and didn’t taste good, but her stomachs couldn’t handle the other foods they provided.

“… Shelter?” Confusion mixed with worry in her voice, Veda isn’t certain just what the meaning behind that is.

Heidi nodded. “It is. Have you ate wild berries before? There are many of them growing along the shore.” she said with a little smile. “I like the blackberries.”

Another pause, trying to think of what Heidi means, and Veda smiles suddenly. “They grow nearby?”

Nessa tilts her head and leans forward. She reaches and gets some blood on her finger.

“This?”

She raises her finger and shows it to her brother. His eyes roll into the back of his head and he passes out again. Nessa’s eyes get wide.

“Maxi?!”

Her try to keep Nessa from showing her now bloody finger to her brother is too slow to keep it from happening, having to get a better hold on Maxwell now that he’s fainted again.

“Nessa… ?”

“I wanted ta see if it was true…”

The little hybrid looked up at her aunt. She bit her lip as she wiped her bloody finger off on her shirt. Maxwell stayed slumped over as he remained unconscious. Nessa took little thought into the fact that now her shirt would have to be changed or else he would be out again.

She’s again trying to be reassuring, holding onto both of them carefully as she stands again. “Now we know that it is.”

He’d woken up on his own before, but still…

Nessa climbs up when she takes Veda’s arm. She gets comfortable and starts to tug on her brother a bit more. He starts to wake up, groggy. He pushes his goggles up with help from Nessa.

“Wha’ happened?”

“I saw blood…and I felt sick…”

He was awake. Relieved, Veda keeps still while the two talk. Making sure to keep her balance, she’s letting how she’s feeling show on her face.

Maxwell remained limp but he was breathing. His healing mutation made it so the small cut was closed up and all that remained was the now drying blood. Nessa was close. She didn’t want to be far from her twin. Reaching for his hand, she tried to jostle him awake.

Making sure to keep ahold of Maxwell, Veda kneels down and offers her other arm to Nessa in order to carry both of them now,

Startled further when Maxwell faints, Veda is just about to head into the bathroom when Nessa catches up, hoping the look on her face is reassuring as she turns part of her attention to the little girl. “He’ll be okay.”

Startled, Veda hurries forward, already reaching to pick Maxwell up. After watching Mike before, she knew how to at least attempt to help, lifting him up carefully and turning to head toward the bathroom.

The little boy was crying a bit. He wasn’t shrieking cause he knew he was okay for the most part. But he was startled and that usually resulted in tears. He reached up and touched the tender spot. Looking down at his fingers, his eyes widened and then he started to gag and cough. He then fainted in her arms.

Nessa was quickly up as well when she heard the impact. Her little legs carried her as quick as they could but sadly Veda was a bit quicker. So she did what any concerned sibling would. She patched into her super speed and caught up in no time. Not hearing Maxwell now, she whined softly.

“Maxi….Maxi…?”

Ah, so that’s what Veda meant. “It is…not like here.” Heidi said, looking out at the city skyline. “You hear the lake and…everything around it. You can…hear the water moving in and out.” Heidi loved listening to the soft waves against the shore. She shook her head, ears flopping gently. “There are not many who live around the lake.”

Biting her lip lightly, Veda is quiet, trying to imagine it. “It seems… quiet.” In a way she didn’t understand, hadn’t yet experienced for more than a few hours.

Heidi nodded. “It is. Have you ate wild berries before? There are many of them growing along the shore.” she said with a little smile. “I like the blackberries.”

About to step in, Veda falls silent, watching as Maxwell works. First one piece than the next, connected to each other correctly without having to be shown which went where. It’s the first time she’d seen something like this.

He pulled his goggles down and started to work on the pieces. He had been happy with fiddling with his log toys and metallic toys. He worked and tried to reach for another piece. He was standing on the chair at this point and was leaning. Just as he was about to grab the piece he squealed losing his balance. He clipped his chin on the table before tumbling to the ground. He started crying as blood dribbled down his neck from his chin. What Veda didn’t know was that the small cut was already healing back up.
